The Battle Within

The scene is set at the impressive Scron Scourst Glen Meavaig and the Forest of Harris Western Isles of Scotland. The atmosphere is bleak and the wilderness is tinged with the last refracting sunlight cast through the foreboding and unsettling storm clouds. The two Red Stags engage seemingly oblivious to the elements.

The red deer stags will only engage in battle when both animals recognise they are closely matched, one sees the challenger and the chance to defend while the other sees the ‘Royal’ equal and the chance for victory. As well as the theme and subject, the title for this oil painting acknowledges our own internal challenges and torment encompassed by the human condition, our capacity for conflicting emotions, struggling with our own fears and insecurities the eternal ‘battle within’ our hearts and minds.
